Chess Activities at Woodbridge
Private Chess Lessons
Woodbridge School is unique in that it offers private classes, either individually or with another student during normal lesson time. One lesson is given per week, and the times of these are rotated so that not more than 2 lessons of any one subject is missed each term. These are open to any child in Year 3 or above and are taken by Mr Hunt. Private lessons are the best way for students to improve their game rapidly. All members of the chess team are actively encouraged to take lessons.
After School Chess Club
Every Wednesday after school from 4.10-5.30 Woodbridge School holds its chess club in B1. Designed for the top young players in Suffolk, the session is training intensive. Please note: It is for invited players only from the local area. (Any Woodbridge school chess club member is welcome).
After school on Thursday the Abbey, our pre-prep school opens its doors to any youngster from the area, along with any member of the Abbey school. This session is held in 5E from 4-5pm. The aim is to get a stream of children improving their chess at the Thursday session before being invited to the sessions on Wednesday at the senior school.
During both sessions we shall be training the youngsters so that they are ready to take the British Chess Federation certificate of excellence awards at Gold, Silver and Bronze level.
Lunchtime Chess Club
Every Monday,Wednesday and Friday lunchtime in B1 Mr Hunt supervises chess sessions. These are fairly informal, and an excellent opportunity for those new to the game to try it out!.
Abbey School Chess
We believe that excellent chess players should learn the game when young, which is why we offer chess to students starting in Year 2 at Queens House, and all through the Abbey. Queens House sessions are currently on Tuesdays after school. from 3.30-4.30pm. The Abbey chess club takes place on Mondays and Thursdays after school (4- 4.45 pm), and also Thursday lunchtime from 1-1.45pm. Private Chess lessons are being introduced at the Abbey as well, and if interested please contact Mr Hunt.
