Chess at the Abbey

The Abbey is fast becoming one of the top preparatory schools for chess. This has been borne out by recent successes, including 13th place at the National Primary Schools semi-finals for the Under 9 team. Due to the progress and rise of the game at the Abbey School a new section has been added with information related to the game at the prep school.

Chess Clubs

The Abbey hosts two after school clubs each week, currently on Mondays and Thursdays, from 4-5pm. The Thursday session is for 'improvers'. For those new to the game or with little experience this is a perfect environment to come and enjoy playing chess! The Monday session is an 'experienced' club, open to children who have been playing chess for some time. The sessions will be more training intensive, with a environment designed to prepare children for tournament chess. Both sessions are open to children in the local area. New for 2009-10 is a girls only club on Wednesday lunchtimes, and we also hold another lunchtime club on Tuesdays from 1-145, open to all.

Chess Lessons

The Abbey holds private chess lessons, during the school day with Mr Hunt in the Year 3 literacy room. These are the quickest way for a child to improve their chess, but must be taken in conjuction with attendance at one of the chess clubs to get the maximum benefit. Currently about 30 children take lessons with Mr Hunt, with ages ranging all the way from Year 3 to Year 6.

Tournaments

As well as the Chess Ladder, an ongoing chess competition at the chess clubs the school takes part in the EPSCA National schools championships at both Under 9 and Under 11 level, and has qualified for the semi-final stages in the last 2 years.

New in 2009 was the introduction of the House Chess Championships between the four houses; Thomas More (2009 winners), Thomas Seckford, William Shakespeare and Queen Elizabeth.
