The majority of the time you devote to improving your game should actually be spent playing. With the advent of internet chess sites you can now find suitable opposition 24 hours a day. Be careful not to just play really fast time controls, 15 to 20 minute rated games on playchess.com or chessclub.com would be ideal.

Solving a few tactical puzzles each day as a routine very quickly pays dividends and there are few players who don’t find this to be a fun challenge. As soon as you are ready you will be given Winning Chess Tactics for Juniors and when this is completed, Combination Challenge!
You will progress faster if you read chess books but only if they are the right books at the right time. Your coach will lend you the appropriate book only if you have brought back the previous one and taken the content on board
However even if you are well coached and diligently work on your game progress will be markedly affected unless there is the regular forging of tournament chess. The competitive pressure is completely different to a normal game, allows new understanding to fully bed down and is very motivating. As soon as possible you should be regularly taking part in tournaments
