Woodbridge Junior Entry form now available

Click here for a copy of the entry form for this years Woodbridge Junior Open. It has been announced that this event will be ECF Rapidplay graded this year.

Woodbridge Juniors compete at Cambridgeshire rapidplay

Well done to all those who took part in this adult event, gaining valuable experience along the way. The next Suffolk adult event is the Bury Congress at the end of October. Mr Gordon is the top seed in the Open section!!

Chess Clubs are moving!

The 2011-12 academic year sees Woodbridge Senior Chess Club move to Mondays. Tuesdays and Thursday afternoons will be the Abbey sessions, and Wednesday will see Queens House. Contact Mr Gordon for further details.

Trinity Term

Encouraging results in the Uk Chess Gigafinal

Results from our students at the Northern Gigafinal can be seen here Anna York-Andersen qualified for the Terafinal, Whilst Alex Rolph and James Phelan both played well to score 4/6 in the Under 10 section. Hugo Kelleway scored 4/6, Campion Mitchell-Cotts scored 3.5 and Felix Kibble 2.5 in the Under 11 section. Albert Xu got 4/6 in the Under 12's and his sister Cathy scored 5/6 to finish 2nd in the Under 9 girls.

Grandmaster Stephen Gordon to take over at Woodbridge!

Former English chess champion Stephen Gordon will take over from Mr Hunt for a year, as of September 2011 whilst he takes a sabbatical. All enquiries to sgordon@woodbridge.suffolk.sch.uk

Woodbridge win Suffolk Under 13 Championship

Congratulations to Albert Xu, William Read, Thomas Lowe and Alexander Craggs who beat Orwell Park 3-1 on Tuesday 22 March to win the Suffolk under 13 title.

Albert Xu wins Mileham Shield

Congratulations to Albert who defeated William Read in an excellent Mileham Shield final. The game was watched by 90+ year 7's. We are hoping Albert will annotate the game shortly for woodbridgechess.

Woodbridge through to county under 13 final

We defeated Stowmarket middle school 4-0 in our semi-final on Tuesday 15 February. Team was: Xu (c), Read, Lowe, Craggs.

Abbey Under 11's qualify for EPSCA Semi-finals

A big congratulations to our Under 11 teams who both qualified for the semi-final stages of the competition, to be held at Pontins, Camber Sands on June 25-26.

Berkeley Chess Exchange

Good progress is being made in our planned chess exchange with the Berkeley chess school. Provisional dates for our guests visit are July 5-12 2011, and we now have 10 students signed up! More to follow shortly.

Lots of excitement within Year 7 this week, with the start of the Mileham Shield next week. Who will emulate last years winner Luke Cerely to become champion, out of a field of almost 100?

Woodbridge-Berkeley chess exchange

So far we have interest from 10 students and families in this exchange programme, set to commence July 2011- come on, lets get at least another 5!.

London Chess Classic

We are going to the London Chess Classic on Wednesday 8 December. We will take a minibus load down, departing 8am and returning 8pm. Anyone interested see Mr Hunt or Dr Wharam.

Suffolk Megafinal results

Woodbridge School hosted the Suffolk Megafinal on Sunday May 9th, to great success. 125 competitors took part, and some excellent chess was played. Full results can be found here

Woodbridge finish adult league season

We finished second equal in this years Suffolk league division two. Hopefully this will be enough to see us promoted

Woodbridge regain schools Under 16 title

Congratulations to Nikolay Lastochkin, Johnathan Keable, Hugo Davis and Daniel Such who won back the schools under 16 title, beating County Upper school 2.5-1.5 in the final.

Lent Term News

Luke Cerely wins Mileham shield!

Congratulations to Luke Cerely who beat Matthew Rickard to become Year 7 Mileham shield champion in a very hard fought game.

Norwich 4 Woodbridge 2

Sadly Norwich again defeated us in the regional final of the National schools championship. It went right to the wire, with the score standing at 3-2 to Norwich with one game going. A win would have seen us through on board count after excellent wins for Nikolay and Patrick, but in a time scramble we lost the match.

National schools championships

We have once again made the final of the East Anglian region of the National schools championships. We will play Norwich School in the final.

London Junior Championships

Hugo Davis (Under 14) Hugo Kelleway, Ethan Buege and Campion Mitchell-Cotts (Under 10 minor) took part at the London Junior championships on the weekend of 12-13 December. Hugo K was top scorer with 4/7. Crosstables and further information can be found at the London Juniors website

Junior 4NCL

All England Girls Gold Finals

Suffolk are National Champions!

Congratulations to the Suffolk Under 125 County team who have become national champions! Absolutely fantastic for Suffolk chess. Find out more at Tim Lunn's excellent new Suffolk chess blog . The winning team included Woodbridge's own Anna Egorova.

Woodbridge's third England international!!!

Summer term is traditionally the quietest, with the adult league season having drawn to a close. However there have been some excellent results recently. Well done to Anna Egorova, who has just finished representing England at the Faber Cup in Glasgow. Her England team finished second in the event. See more at the tournament homepage

UK Chess Challenge success

Well done to all those from the school and the Suffolk area who competed in the Northern Gigafinals at Failsworth on the weekend of July 18-19. Ethan Buege (Under 8) and Edward Venmore-Rowland (Under 17) finished 2nd in their respective National age groups and therefore qualified for the challengers section of the Terafinal. Anna Egorova went one better and won her section (Under 16 girls) and therefore will compete for the title of Strat and the frist prize of £2000 at the Terafinal.

Woodbridge 'B' through to Under 13 Final

Woodbridge beat Debenham High School away on Monday night to reach the final of the Suffolk Under 13 competition. There they will meet the winners of the other semi-final, between Woodbridge 'A' and All Saints school, to be played on Wednesday evening. Congratulations to Daniel Such, Laurence Porter, Balazs Liptay-Wagner and Robert Johnson for getting through.

Junior 4NCL, Second weekend

The second weekend of the junior 4NCL saw the school finish second equal overall, behind Wellington College. Congratulations to Edward, Anna, Patrick and Sam who all played their part in this great result

Woodbridge to host All England Girls Gold Finals

I am delighted to report that Woodbridge School will be hosting the All England Girls Gold Finals, featuring the best girl chess players from across the country. The date is set for Sunday June 21. Visit
