CHESS IN THE SCHOOL

Application forms for chess lessons are available from Mr Hunt

A 30 lesson year is operated although this may not mean that 10 lessons are provided every term and may be distributed as follows

Number of lessons:

Michaelmas Term 12

Easter Term 10

Summer Term 8

Pupils taking GCSE or A Levels will normally only take 25 lessons in the year, stopping at half term in the Summer Term unless special arrangements are made

Chess lessons are organized on a rotation system in Years 7 – 10 during academic lessons, the same subject not being missed more than three times per term. Consideration is given to years 11, 12 and 13 so that they miss as little academic work as possible, lessons being given before or after school, at lunchtime or in study periods where possible.

Chess Cards

Every pupil must have a blue Chess card. This should have the date and time of each lesson recorded on it and should be countersigned by the chess teacher when the lesson has been given. Chess Lesson timetables are displayed by both the Junior House Room and B1

Tournaments and School Teams

Woodbridge School hosts a major chess tournament each term and pupils are expected to play in these three ‘home tournaments’ together with three ‘away tournaments’ each year. Matches with local schools are organized where practical but playing suitable opposition may sometimes involve travelling significant distances and pupils are thus encouraged to play in the adult Suffolk chess league and for the adult Suffolk team.

Discontinuing Lessons

It is recommended that the Head of Chess is consulted before the decision to end lessons is taken. Lessons can only be discontinued at the end of a term, not at half term. Half a term’s notice is required to discontinue lessons and parents should inform the Head of Chess in writing by the start of half term break if lessons are to cease at the end of term. If sufficient notice is not given a term’s fees will be due.

Missed Lessons

If a pupil is away from School efforts will be made to make up missed lessons as far as possible. Lessons are not made up for pupils who are in School and miss lessons through forgetfulness or other reasons. Adjustments to chess accounts are made at the end of the Summer Term and not the other terms.
